  • It's actually quite common in the lower mammals.
    I could say fish, reptiles and things like that too but many of the species in those groups don't raise young.  All mammals do though.

    Back to it.  Many mammals will abandon or even kill/eat their young if the young are very ill, deformed, or if food/water becomes dangerously scarce for them both.

    Animals do it quite a lot, especially to the poor little runts. I've raised kittens that had been abandoned by their mothers, they've always been the frail little runts.
