Weird. Two London underground stations on Oxford Street reopened after a "terrorist" incident scare. What could have caused it?

People said they heard gun shots and explosions. Panic ensued of course. After investigating police said there was no evidence that shots were fired or that there were any casualties. So will they ever figure out what people heard, who caused it and why?

Perhaps some pranksters got into the sound system.

Geez some a**holes they are if  that is what/who caused it. Panic ensued. I don't know if anyone got hurt fighting to get away from what they thought were gunshots. What a  stupid thing to do! Thank you for your reply bh!  :)

Could have been almost anything. After all, the supposed sounds were different - "gun shots" or "explosions".

I don't know if the reported reports were heard below ground or above (in or around the station entrance), but acoustics in tunnels can play tricks; and from the few times I have visited London and used the Underground, I know the thumps of the wheels passing over the rail joints can sometimes sound very heavy.

I don't know the particular station but in some at least you can hear train sounds or other noises from tunnels not actually through your station because the track junctions are not in the stations themselves.

I'd have thought the cause would have been identified by now. I don't really believe the practical joke BHWilson suggests, but I suppose it might be feasible. Was any building or maintenance work going on in the vicinity, that may have created odd noises?
