"They" say that when hypnotized you will not do anything you wouldn't do normally. What about brainwashing? Can THAT change you permanently?

Can a brainwashed person become robotic and do whatever he/she is PROGRAMMED to do no matter how heinous it is forever after? What's the diff between hypnosis and brainwashing? Temporary/permanent.  Benign intention/evil intention?
