Would you want to get a notification if somebody unfriended you?

For anyone that pays close attention to their friend list, they would know you'd unfriended them anyway, regardless of any notification. But in either case, why would it matter to you if they knew it?

That was meant as a bit of a joke. 

If someone in r/l unfriended you, don't 
you think you would be aware of it?  If not, you would continue to think of them as a friend, right?

Not necessarily.
I have many friends across country ... and even some in other countries.
So I don't see them often.  
And we all have things to do outside of our friendship, so if we don't respond to each other's posts or texts ... it is thought "they are busy" not "they are no longer my friend".
