You watch I Love Lucy reruns and know Lucy and Desi divorced. Does knowing about their afterwards detract from enjoying it?

You watch The Wizard of Oz and know all about the grand glory and sad hardships of Judy Garland's life. You see Rita Hayworth on the screen as Gilda and know she died of Alzheimer's. Or James Dean in any of the few movies he made dying at such a young age in a car crash. Allegedly his heart was broken when Pier Angeli married Vic Damone. Or Natalie Wood as Gypsy Rose Lee knowing she drowned with some mystery surrounding it decades later. Or Robin Williams as Mork or Mrs. Doubtfire or just himself cracking up audiences with his zany brilliance knowing how his life ended. Bittersweet.

I get absorbed in the character, not the actor, so even though I might briefly think of things in the actor's personal life, it does not really derail me from the story I am watching.

You are very lucky m'dear. I sincerely mean that. I am always burdened by the knowledge of what happened afterwards in their real lives. I wish I could isolate that knowledge and put it off in some faraway room and never think about it. I see the early glory of  Bruce Jenner and know the circumstances of her now and wonder is she really happier now or was she happier then? "And they lived happily ever after" is unusual,  sad to say. I see Debbie Reynolds in  Singin' in the Rain and know she died of a broken heart a day after her daughter Carrie died. That is unbelievably sad. Thank you for your reply Weylon and Happy Saturday! :)
