Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Would it bother you if folks thought of you as "semi-literate"? If they told you that how would you respond? "Yes I is" or "no I isn't?"
How would you pull that off since it would be the spoken word, not the written? Would you want to know "why" someone said that of you or thought of you or just assume the person was an idiot and not respond at all? Thank you for your reply JakobA. Seriously. What would you say/do if someone said that about you to your face?
I would ask "what makes you think that?" and wait for a reply and then go from there. I am very literate to so some and probably an ignoramus to others. I would need to know exactly and specifially what I said to give someone that impression. If it were simply coming from a Republican who automatically/robotically insults all Liberals I'd pay no attention. If it came from someone whom I respect I"d like to know the why. Maybe I'm just more curious than you or maybe you're far more confident in your literacy than I am in mine. Thank you for your reply Ele and Happy New Year and Happy Monday! :)
I see no underline anywhere and I also don't know what you mean when you say "I shut if off" . I don't hang out with such cretins either but you don't need to hang out with folks to have them insult you. Thank you for your reply Ele and Happy Tuesday!
Because of who I voted for? Well let them think whatever they want. I don't know all of literature, in fact maybe only a little literature. But I can read and enjoy doing so and am paid for writing letters and business reports. So some people must consider me somewhat literate.
No og. I think it's strange that you would think that since it is nowhere in my question nor did that even occur to me to be honest with you. Not because of the person you voted for. Someone referred to donjohn as "semi-literate". So I just wondered how others would react to something like that? I would ask "why do you think that?" and go from there. What would you do/say? Thank you for your reply and Happy Monday! :)
Well guess I knew it had something to do with the president. What he reads of does not read is his business. If I enjoy reading say a play of Shakespeare I don't necessarily think that everyone should read it. I have my own level of learning and enjoyment and everyone has theirs. I grew up with bookstores but there are now very few left so most books I order I must do so online. I guess Trump, who is older than me, gets a lot from the net and TV neither of which I know much about. We watch some TV but do more reading of books. I don't know - just sounds like another put down or a way of looking down at him. But whatever literature he knows or does not know he is the president and I doubt you are elected by the amount of literature you know. He has achieved what he has in life because of or despite his reading just as with you or I. People will always judge other negatively for whatever reasons they choose - if they choose to.
