Real compromises never happen in politics. A real compromise is when BOTH parties have made concessions to arrive at a deal that is acceptable to both sides and when the matter is permanently settled.
In politics so called "compromise" always favors the party that wants change and hurts the party that want to keep things the same. Imagine corporation tax rate is 20%. X wants it to remain 20%. Y wants it raised to 40%. They 'compromise' and agree on 30%. It's not a real compromise, it's just a partial surrender. Only X has made a real concession. Y has only given up having everything it wants now. There is nothing to stop Y making renewed demands later. Everything is constantly renegotiated.
2018 may well be the year of compromise, but it's the right that is now the political movement of change. It's the left is trying to maintain the status quo. It's the left's turn to die the slow death of compromise.
