I've always given at least two weeks' notice before leaving a job.  I was fired once with no notice, but they gave me two weeks' severance pay which was fine with me.

I've ALWAYS given two weeks' notice as well. I was only fired once. That was by a very emotional architect who immediately apologized and asked me to stay. I refused. I stayed two weeks to train a replacement. Every day he tried to change my mind. There was no changing it. A line had been crossed and that was that. Thank you for your reply Spunky. I wouldn't have minded getting out from under and walking away with two weeks' pay either! For sure!  :)

I think it's only unfair if they fire you and expect you to leave immediately without any compensation.

That would be really hard on me Spunky. I've always left things as immaculate and complete as I could. Left instructions. Trained a replacement if they got one in time. I'm a really proud person about the quality of my work and I would feel horrible if I just left everything and the folks had to figure things out. It would literally damage me. I can't even almost conceive of it. I always stayed to the very last minute on my very last day. In fact my boss from the last job (the job I retired from so there was no negativity or hard feelings whatsoever) told me I could leave early. I thanked her and told her I had a few more things to wrap up. When I left I took nothing with me in the way of regret or loose ends or things left hanging. I always needed to do it that way. That's just how I'm wired so I guess I"ve been really lucky that I could do it my way. Thank you for your reply Spunky! :)'

I am the same way.  They get their money's worth to the very end.  That's what happens when you have pride in yourself and your work.  Happy Saturday. :)
