Stone is an old British unit for measuring weight, ca 14 pounds. It is still used in England, usually for measuring peoples weight.

nd I still see people using it as a unit of weight, at least when talking about peoples weight. It is kind of perfect for that because the stone is an integrer umit (it does not support decimal points and a more precise measurment) allow people to gain and loose several pounds daily as the eat, drink, and go to the loo
For trading of course, the Stone i pretty useless. There you need more precise measurents.

I weigh between    Eight and a half stone and nine stone.......you hear that and know exactly how heave a person is......say the same in kilos and gramms and I have no idea......
i had to learn metrication school....with measure and weight it's easier in imperial though ...I have instant recall of how big ,how heavy and low long things are.....
metric is just a mass of numbers and the numbers can become confusing to remember......

My dad and grand fathers  all still use imperial measures....I like it and make far. less mistakes measuring things....
    Dopey foreign  measurements are confusing....

Some people still use it.  When I was in Scotland a little while back my friend, Clem, talked about deer in terms of how many "stone" they weighed.  I barely remembered hearing that once or twice when I was in grade school, probably in old movies.
