How much "reality" exists absent human perception? Do we creare reality and unless we keep imagining it nothing is there?

Some say we create our own reality. If true why would we create a reality that is ugly, hurtful, harmful, damaging, dangerous, deceitful? Why wouldn't we create in time and space a place where we could live peaceful lives, productive lives, honorable lives  in harmony with others? Why would we create tragedy and misery and duplicity and evil? I don't get it.

Reality is what it is regardless of how, or if, we perceive it. We, with our limited senses, form our own versions of what is or is not ”reality”.

The difference between “fact” and “truth”.

Fact is reality that which unfailingly withstands scrutiny: water is wet, the sun is warm, 1+2 =3, and so on.
Truth is subjective, where our individual takes on reality differ.

The rest of your query can be addressed as the collective product(s) of our nature. This post was edited by Don Barzini at February 4, 2018 9:25 AM MST

You do know that some physicists say there is no reality apart from us and we create it. It is all illusion. Is that a possibility you could entertain? Thank you for your reply DonB. We don't all perceive reality as being the same. I believe I read or saw something that stated "water is not always wet". I did not Google that and perhaps I imagined it. Dry ice "melts" into dust and is waterless. I don't know if that has any bearing on this conversation so forgive me if it is completely irrelevant. Thank you for your reply! :)

Dry ice isn’t water, it is solid Carbon Dioxide: Co2, not H2o.

But to your point: neither is the sun warm nor water wet, on Neptune.

As for the old “life is an illusion” schtick- Our perceptions determine what WE DEEM as reality, we could show in cases that numerous illusions are embraced therein.

I entertain that actual reality (what IS) exists in the world around us, and does so whether we perceive it or not.
I.e., a falling tree does make a sound when no one is there to hear it hit the ground.

Evidence of sound requires the ability to hear. A tree falls and if it is large enough/heavy enough there are rumblings and vibrations that one can FEEL even if totally deaf not to mention that if you are standing too close you will get crushed. You said water is wet. I said that some say it isn't. That "wet" is merely the way we describe the sensation we feel on our skin. You did not address that. Neptune was never part of the discussion Don. Your bringing in is curious. What was the point of doing that? If life is like the movie MATRIX how would you know? If it is like the movie where Jim Carrey's life is a worldwide TV show with actors and scripted and he is doesn't know how would you know? I think it's fair to opine. It's fair to believe what makes sense to you and not believe what doesn't. My perceptions may be spot on or all wrong. I KNOW I don't know anything. You seem to think you do and that's way okay for you. It doesn't work for me. Thank you for your reply. I'm open to all possibilities inncluding that I am a butterfly dreaming I'm a human. I have never dreamt that I was a butterfly. Have you?

The human intellect cannot be put in possession of its object by some exterior agent that takes it there. There is for us no knowledge except our own knowledge, no truth except self-acquired truth.

The trick is to conform our minds to that which exists so that we actually know what is true.

We are limited by many things tom not the least of which is our intellect. Our brains have the same components but we are all wired differently. Our emotions are extremely important as well. Some live their lives completely driven by their emotions. Others don't allow emotion to muddy the waters and try to keep them out of their "thinking". I don't agree with your elimination of an "exterior agent". I don't subscribe to it either. I am simply open to anything since I KNOW nothing. I think about things 24/7 but I am not unlimited as to how far I can go with it. Some things I can grasp easily. Others are beyond my comprehension. So there are no closed doors in my mind. I like to learn new things. Sometimes those new things are wrong and they are replaced by other newer things that also turn out to be wrong. Such is life. I see no absolutes anywhere. SIGH. I sure wish I did. It would make things a whole easier. Everything is in a state of flux. Now you see it now you don't. Trying to keep your balance amidst all the upheaval isn't always easy. Thank you for your reply! :)
