Of course right after another massive gun-related slaughter is not the "right time" to talk about gun control. WHEN IS?

Never. We have plenty of gun laws. Enforce them.
Don't have "gun free zones" aka easy targets.

We already have gun control laws. We simply need to enforce them.

And what law---had it been enforced---would have prevented what just happened in Florida?

He should have been in the system as mentally unfit person to own a gun. He should not have passed the background check. Someone did not do their job. Same thing happened in TX that shooter also should not have passed the NCIC check. This post was edited by my2cents at February 15, 2018 2:01 PM MST

Well anyone can talk about "gun control" all they want any time or everytime.  As long as they don't abridge the Contitutional amendment right of Americans to use arms if they need to.

"...to use arms if they need to."  None of these school shootings NEEDED to be committed.  No one was threatening the shooters.  None of them were self-defense and all of them killed or maimed innocent people unnecessarily.  The Constitution did not have any of these events in mind.  You people need to wake the heck up.XXX

    • I agree.  Which is why they are criminals.  Same as when someone decides to rob us or compel us to do whatever at gunpoint. which anyone can decide to at any point if they wish. That is freedom.  But when they use their freedom to commit criminal acts then they make themselves criminals and hopefully they lose that freedom.  Back then they had militias and regular people belonged.  Now we have police/military but the principle is the same - that we have the right to defend ourselves. That some people are going to abuse that right is inevitable but does not negate that right.  My husband and I do not own any guns - we do not choose to.  Nor do we give to the gun lobby or the NRA. and money. But we will defend, perhaps to the death, the rights that have come down to us from our forefathers and mothers.

Give me one valid reason why anyone other than someone in the military or the police department or other department charged with public safety should be able to by a semi-automatic weapon that holds a significant number of rounds of ammo.  There isn't one and the sooner people realize that allowing the sale of such weapons is counter to public safety, the better off we will all be.

There is not going to be any talks about gun control so better safety measures need to be in place at the schools.
Putting better metal detectors would help, beefing up security people with guns would also help.
Maybe even giving the kids bullet proof vests will save some lives.
Arming the teachers and kids with guns to defend themselves would be another thought.
If people don't like those ideas, take the kids out of school and keep them at home and homeschool them. Which is what I would do.
This form of violence is NOT going to stop and there will be no fixing it.

So in order to survive we live as if we are under siege 24/7. SIGH. Thank you for your thoughtful reply Lulu'sMom. I know. It  is what it is and pretending/hoping/wishing it were otherwise is useless. :( How sad is that?

News reports today are say this was the 18th school shooting this year so far. To be clear that's the calendar year. Since January. In 45 days. Sadly, it seems any time it is discussed, it will always be right after another tragic shooting. There is no other time.

The local talk radio station had a brief discussion on the 18 school shootings this year.  The professor interviewed  made the point that telling high school kids about that number isn't helping them feel any more secure...

He also said that number included suicides, parking lot arguments, and bullets fired from off-campus that landed on campus.

That doesn't diminish the tragedy of all those shootings, but it is good not to lose perspective.

I asked a question this morning about having a national lottery to guess how many more school shootings there will be and how many will die. Dark as he** question I know but people will bet on anything JA and the gun folks don't give  rat's a** about any of it. If they did they would CHANGE it! Thank you for your reply and happy Friday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at February 16, 2018 4:36 AM MST

Those who want guns will always get them regardless of any laws. Gun control laws work about as well as Prohibition and anti-marijuana statutes.

This country stands among all other countries for the number of CRAZIES that insist upon having access to UNLIMITED guns, rifles, howitzers, bazookas, cannons, AK whatevers. They are nutjob bonkers. Other countries have managed to survive without having anyone and everyone armed with a loaded weapon. I wonder how they managed? Bah humbug. Americans are gun crazy period. Is it a phallic symbol?

I want the funds towards mental healthcare tripled!  Seriously, it is so hard to get help, even if you can identify a person at risk.  I personally think it's sickening that services are being cut while the NRA has a president that will give them what they want!
