NRA Public Affairs Director Jennifer Baker said in a statement, "Federal Law prohibits adults under the age of 21 from purchasing a handgun from a licensed firearm dealer. Legislative proposals that prevent law-abiding adults aged 18-20 years old from acquiring rifles and shotguns effectively prohibits them for purchasing any firearm, thus depriving them of their constitutional right to self-protection."

She added, "We need serious proposals to prevent violent criminals and the dangerously mentally ill from acquiring firearms. Passing a law that makes it illegal for a 20 year-old to purchase a shotgun for hunting or an adult single mother from purchasing the most effective self-defense rifle on the market punishes law-abiding citizens for the evil acts of criminals."

I don't where the middle ground is on this one.

Me too neither. I don't know if a middleground would do anything anyway. Thank you for your reply m2c and Happy Friday to thee! :)

We've been able to discriminate against age groups with respect to alcohol and voting---One would think we could figure this out to.

If free speech doesn't extend to yelling "Fire!" in a crowded theater unless there actually is one, we should be able to find the balance in this problem as well.

I remember an old cartoon (around the time blacks were referred to as "Negroes) where a black kid and a white kid were talking.  The caption was the black child speaking and saying "I'll sell you my chance to be president for a nickle.'

(At the time, I suspect both blacks and whites both would have agree that was too much to pay.)

Maybe there is hope. This post was edited by tom jackson at February 23, 2018 1:58 AM MST

I dunno. Prez sez raise the age. Outlaw the device that turns a legal gun into one that isn't. Do more extensive background checks. He also sez arm teachers who are "adept" with guns. He giveth with one hand and taketh away with the other.  Only in words thus far of course. Only in words. What will actually happen beyond talk is anyone's guess. I think the kids may be our only hope. They will be voting. They have put pols on notice that any pol who accepts money from the NRA will not get their vote. Of course that would have to wait for them to be old enough to vote and for it to be a presidential election year but I believe they are determined. In the meantime they are going to raise HE**. They're not gonna shut up. Perhaps they are the light at the end of the dark tunnel in which we walk blindly bumping into things we did not expect and cannot see. Thank you for your thoughtful reply tom! :)
