My son's name was legally changed too. My ex adopted him. I remember walking him through the process and explaining how he'd get a new name. He excitedly asked, "Can I be Yu-gi-oh?"
He was 7 or 8. Prior to that, he went through phases where he would only answer to "Beast Boy," "Superman," "Batman," or "Spider-Man." I was able to edge him away from the superhero names by explaining that superheros never reveal their true identity in order to protect themselves and their families. That bought me a few months until he switched to Yu-gi-oh.
When I married I took my husband's name. Of course. I think it's nutty and kooky not to unless you know there will never be children. Even then, nutty.
