Often taking responsibility is averted by the "I or we would not have done it if YOU had not allowed it" argument. In a

hypothetical scenario is this argument a credible excuse for not owning up to what you have done?
"I could not have shot up all those people if YOU had not provided me with a gun" is one of countless examples.

    No, generally people are responsible for what they do.  When another provides misinformation to encourage the actor, that could affect responsibility IF a reasonable man would have no reason to verify the information.  If the act is an illegal one, the burden is much higher and generally conviction would not be averted.
