You are obviously out of shape as far as the norm but as far as your own body, you are not out of the norm.

Me or one? I'm 5' 6" and weigh between 118 and 122. I fluctuate. I walk a lot. I lift heavy  bottles of water because Jim has a bad back. We go to the "water store"  regularly. We have 3-gallon bottles which when filled weigh 24 lbs. Now lifting that isn't a big deal for young folks. I'm 80. That's pretty dam* good for someone my age. So you do mean "one is" but that one isn't me. Right? Thank you for your reply and the oddly amusing graphic. Decades ago a Senor Wences did a schtick with a hand puppet like that.  Part of the dialogue was "You like?" "I like". "It's good?" "It's good".  Thank you for your reply Sharon and Happy Sunday! : This post was edited by RosieG at March 25, 2018 2:13 AM MDT

    Yes.

Everyone is in some sort of shape (condition) at any given point in time.  However, exactly what that “shape” is solely depends on who or what it is being compared to (i.e. another person, a circumstance, etc.).  Unless a person maintains or develops their current “shape”, that “shape” will deteriorate (second law of thermodynamics).   Therefore, if a person who was considered to be “out of shape” at some point didn’t maintain that same level of “out of shape-ness”, then their "shape" would decline even further, making them more “out of shape” than the point they were first declared to be “out of shape”.

Which means that  being "in shape" or "out of shape" always "depends upon the comparison". It is not a thing of itself. It does not stand alone.Age plays a part no matter how active you are. Compare me to a "normal" 80 year old and I'm in great shape! But compare me to an athlete or body builder? Bad shape. That's what bothers me. If everything always depends on something else what was the first thing in existence that something/someone was compared to? I'm brilliant compared to someone with an IQ of 80 who never reads or thinks. I'm super average when you compare me to a genius whose brain/mind/ability to think is so far  beyond my comprehesnion a comparison is ludicrous. Where does that leave me?  I must await something/someone to be compared with to make a statement at all about what "shape" I'm in, either literally or figuratively. Doesn't that bother you too? Thank you for your thoughtful reply Shuhak and Happy Sunday! :)
