Are you a victim of ageism? As an old fogey do you perceive kids/teens with contempt and disdain because they dare do/say what you won't?

Some, maybe many, think the young don't know what the he ** they are talking about and should therefore remain silent and let the old fogeys call all the shots because theirs are the only views that count? Seriously?  Old Age is not a guarantee of smarts or wisdom or intelligence. All it is a guarantee of is that the old fogeys are closer to death than the young people. Period. And to be rattled/angry about young people marching and speaking out says everything we need to know about them.  These kids LIVED THROUGH terror. Have they? No wonder we are in the mess we're in. The old fogeys refuse to listen to the young. The old fogeys think they know everything there is to know and that the young people have nothing to add to the conversation and should just shut up. Old fogeys are destroying our country. Our only hope lies with the young. SIGH.

Kids speaking out is irritating. They've seen so little of life and yet already think they know better than people of far greater experience. It's just pure arrogance.

Perhaps you'd like to recount some stories from history of political youth movements having a positive effect on a society. ...(Sound of crickets chirping...)

Such movements exist to brainwash those most vulnerable. It's targeting people who are too young and foolish to know better and it's targeting the maternal instinct of women. The system knows women are weak to the desires of children. This post was edited by Zeitgeist at March 30, 2018 5:32 AM MDT

I'm pretty sure it was the young people who protested against the Vietnam War resulting in our getting the heck out of Dodge.  As a corollary result, the draft was eliminated.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that getting to a certain age automatically makes you smart or wise.  There are some very fine young people who are wise beyond their years and smart, too.

I don't. Rosie is 80 after all and surely living proof that there are exceptions.

I have no time for the war on generalisations. It doesn't matter some young people are intelligent and insightful and some old people are dumb. Young people have a net negative effect on society when run their mouths. Though I suppose even broken clocks are right twice a day.

The war in Vietnam was a far more complex issue than gun control. Sometimes people do the right thing for the wrong reasons. Many who opposed the Vietnam war did so because they were communist sympathisers, not out of wisdom.

You know, it really shows your lack of class to make such a nasty comment about Rosie.  Too bad you weren't raised properly.

I have no time for your mean-spirited, low class remarks about others on here.

The far left don't deserve respect. I was raised to be honest and real.

They lose the argument every single time the moment they attack someone personally.  That's how little children fight.

Clearly, when they speak disrespectfully to or about someone, it's OK, but not when someone else does.

I won't even answer anything that sounds like it just came from some crazy political source.  You start to recognize the certain phrases and rhetoric after a while.  Same 'ol, same 'ol.

Hypocrisy is when you fail to practice what you preach. I have never said I disaprove of insulting others. I'm absolutely fine with people insulting others. If someone insults me or someone I like, I might criticise them for it, but I'm attacking the content of what they said, not questioning their right to do it.

I believe insults are an essential part of public discourse. The difference is that when the right insult people, it's almost always based on factually accurate moral arguments. When the left insult people, it's almost always sh*t they made up to smear their opponent. This post was edited by Zeitgeist at March 31, 2018 11:24 AM MDT

When I think of all the marches for civil rights, women's rights, the Vietnam war, and countless others, it makes me feel proud to live in a country where people still will take a stand.

Young people have gotten such a bum rap for not being involved and now that they are, older generations seemed quite threatened.  Interesting.  I hope my kids and my grandchildren will use their voice too when they see a wrong.  It's what I hope to have instilled in them.

I agree. The old fogeys about whom I speak are useless, tiresome, worthless and antiquated relics. All they do is complain about how dare the young think they have anything to offer. An answermugger even said no young person is gonna lecture him about anything! Can you believe that attitude? A bull headed stubborn belief that wisdom only resides in the old fogeys and the young have nothing to offer. SIGH. Thank you for your reply PeaPod and Happy Friday! :)

Totally agree with you. I was a part although a small part in the civil rights movement. These young kids have so much more going for them than those who put them down. These people who put them down were young fools who turned into old ones!

I think these kids make them nervous!  Kinda like that generation in the 60s that were not longer willing to be shipped off to Vietnam to fight and die in a war that was no longer viable.

The definition of Ageism to me is calling an elderly person an old foggey.
