    Hello there Rosie..

Like everything else, Tires have gone through many improvement over the years.

Look back on the tires used on the model T, they were more like bicycle tires. Over time cars were improved with more horsepower, better suspension and braking. Tires had to keep up, the tire used on that model T would not work for a Ferrari driving 150 m.p.h.

There have been improvements in materials and design. We no longer have tubes...

There are now as many tire types as there is terrain, or weather. Someone living in Snow will have different tires than someone living in dryer climates. People who drive a sports car will have a different tire than someone with an off road vehicle.

Materials have changed as well, We went from rubber with a tube to reinforced tires. Then they played with the bias of the plies, now  Radial. Some new tires are reinforced with Kevlar...

Tires are now mostly low profile compared to tires which used to be tall and skinny.

I read where Mazda was experimenting with tires that can adjust their tread as needed...

There was a movie some years back called IRobot. The cars in the movie all had spherical wheels (no tires) that could move in any direction, how long might it be till we see that, parallel parking would be a breeze...

    Have a great day m'dear

Absolutely there are always improvements on materials and designs.  I watched a Forensic Files program in the series where a man who was an expert in tire marks talked a bit about all the variants and what he looks for when trying to trace a tire.  It was most interesting.

Seriously?  I had no idea.  Tires always look the same to me. They're made of rubber and are black and have treads. I know some are guaranteed for more miles than others. Hun. Who knew? Thank you for your reply Sharonna and Happy Wednesday! :)

They're black, made of rubber and have treads. Where's the difference?  They keep getting rounder? Are you serious mdear or are you just teasing me? Thank you for your reply char and Happy Wednesday. I know some cost more because they are guaranteed for more miles. The ones my son put on our car years ago were 60,000 mile tires but I know there are also 30,000 mile tires. They look the same to me. Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday! :)

Whoa and wow des! Thank you for a most thoughtful and informative response. It is very helpful.  All tires are black, round, made of rubber and have treads. Or so I thought. They all look the same to me though I do remember seeing old-time cars in movies with very skinny tires. My son put 60,000 tires on our car years ago and we are due to replace them. I know there are 30,000 mile tires too.   I appreciate the info! Happy Wednesday my friend! :)

Improvement happen, but they happen slowly.

As an example tires are often made by putting rubber on both sides of a 'wheel shaped' net of steel wires. In my youth I frequently found such tyres made that had 'delaminated' so the rubber on one side of the net had peeled off. I have seen it in movies too. The outer layer of rubber peeling off as a car drove down the road. That is pretty unthinkable nowadays. But there is still a net of reinforcing wires built into the car tires, they just do not delaminate anymore.
