Ex-CIA agent Evan McMullin said he may initiate a run for prez by running as an Independent. At this late date how is that gonna be possible?

Apparently anti-Trump Republicans are supporting him as an antidote to Trump.  Are there rules that control a candidacy? Would he be breaking any of them?

    There are qualifications and deadlines that have to be met before you can get your name on the ballot. But he can always be a write in candidate if he cannot get on the ballot.

    1. No, he can join two other independent candidates: Libertarian's Gary Johnson and Green Party's Jill Stein.

    2. However, no independent candidate has ever been elected President.

    So m2c what would happen if a write-in candidate actually won? Would he/she be our legal president? Having missed all the primaries and not been on any ballots in advance? That is mindboggling!   Thank you for the info and Happy Tuesday! :)
