My mother's voluntary absence in my life. I'm not sure how I feel now that all these years have passed, but it still hurts. The last time I spoke with her on the phone, she said, "You sound older!"

    Kidney stones.

They are every bit as painful as their reputation.

  • "Voluntary" on her part or yours?

  • I can well imagine that.

My boss of five years ago had them.

The night I found out I had them, the Emergency Room staff gave me three shots of fentanyl and two shots of morphine to get the pain under control (that's a lot).

It's been her choice throughout my childhood, and now it's both of us who are negligent. I have become bitter towards her. Maybe someday it'll even out, but I don't, and refuse to, have any expectations for her.

  • I went through it two years ago. My college girlfriend - my closest friend and confidante.

Neelie, I'm sorry for your loss.  The death of someone you love, while the pain lessens, it never leaves you entirely.

When my brother passed away. Or did you mean purely physical pain? That would probably be having my wisdom teeth come in and immediately out... That was an especially painful experience. It hurt worse than broken bones, an attack by a dog and even childbirth. It's also proof positive that mouth isn't nearly as big as folks give me credit for ;)

  • Thank you for your answer, ForkNdaRoad. I didn't mean physical pain alone; emotional pain as well. If you read my comments to some of the other replies, you will see.
