I wouldn't agree with that: newscasters, especially at the local level, often say "car crash" instead of "car accident" or "collision"; "pot" instead of marijuana"; "coke" instead of "cocaine"; "tagger" instead of "graffiti vandal"; etc.
Also (and this one drives me batty), the "cute" way to deliver the news and get better ratings than their rivals is to have a pun interjected somewhere in almost every story. Puns are notorious for and synonymous with slang.
Besides, newspeak is not a language in and of itself, it is a manner of speaking.
