I'm not sure I want to believe fortune cookies anymore ...
Fortune - "A good friend will pay for your meal". What really happened - My friend had to borrow the money from me. Fortune - "You will have many happy returns". What really happened - I got food poisoning from eating there.
Fortune - "Your ship is about to come in". What really happened - I hit a canoe someone had lost on the road as I was driving home from the restaurant.
Fortune - "You will become very popular". What really happened - My car happened to match one that was recently used in a bank robbery. I was surrounded by 50 cops (with their weapons drawn) less than 2 miles from the restaurant.
All nifty but my favorite is the last one! Thank you for your reply Shuhak and Happy Thursday. Years ago I got a fortune cookie fortune that said I was gonna be very wealthy. I'm 80. I'm still waiting. SIGH. :)
Wealth does not necessarily equal money. I'm dirt poor (I can't even afford to rent dirt), but I'm wealthier than many billionaires. Only viewing wealth from one's bank account severely limits one's field of vision.
It is called a FORTUNE cookie m'dear. i shall write what the dictionary says about FORTUNE.
Position in life as determined by one's WEALTH. Wealth or riches Great wealth. Ample stock of money, property and the like
The same is true of being SUCCESSFUL. Many believe it is centered on WEALTH/MONEY. A successful person need not have money or position or power or influence or be well known. That is something that each of us determines for ourselves. No outsider can label you successful or wealthy. Only you can do that. HOWEVER when one is talking about FORTUNE cookies it is inherent in the genre that money is what is being discussed. Wealth in fortune cookie language means MONEY honey. You can attribute to it whatever you wish..however esoteric or arcane your interpretation. When one speaks of a "fortune" the normal thing to think about is MONEY. Did I beat that dead horse enough to convince you? Yes. I am successful. Yes. I am fortunate. However I am still awaiting the fortune cookie definition of fortune which is money. Thank you for your reply Shuhak. I'm very glad you are wealthy however you define it! After all you are the only one who counts when deciding if you are or you are not! :)
