An Answermug pal who is a scientist says "being right is important". Agreed. But what happens when two EXPERTS disagree on what's right?

I wonder if there is any profession where there is 100% agreement on what is right? With some things it really doesn't matter. What accessories go with what outfit for example. Who cares really? What does it matter? But if it is a health issue and doctors disagree  where does that leave the patient? Or if it is a legal issue the lawyers/attorneys disagree where does that leave the client? Some things should REQUIRE unanimity of opinion. Like surgery or preventing nuclear war. So how do we get to consensus on life-death issues?

Well, that could be a problem---unless of course I am one of the experts and so designate myself as one in the discussion.

But seriously, lawyers and doctors give "advice" as opposed to guaranteed results---based on their experience, understanding, quality of their training and natural intelligence and similar abilities.

That's why some lawyers advertise they don't charge you if you don't win, and it's why hospitals have mortality and morbidity conferences to critique the treatment the patient received---regardless of whether the patient lived or died.

Helen Keller said, "Life is nothing if it is not an adventure."

"Good" Experts try to give the minds of others truths to satisfy those minds rather than doubts to confuse them--and they are also likely to say when they are entering uncharted territory.  And if there is a supportable contrary opinion to theirs, they are likely to include it in their discussions and comments.

I knew you wouldn't mind my asking a question based on our chat on a different question thread and your words tom. Is it an ego thing among "experts"? Some TV lawyers insist a sitting prez CANNOT be indicted while others say there is nothing in the Constitution preventing it. Yet has any prez ever been indicted? Which lawyer is right in that instance? It's more than frustrating for lay people who go to experts for help because they need answers and aren't knowledgeable enough to figger things out on their own. It seems to me there is only one TRUTH in any situation. One absolute right . Or should be. But I see clearly around me that "TRUTH" is untrue. How else do you explain the millions of people who support/defend/adore/admire/trust/worship don juan while the rest of us despise the guy? We believe different truths and which truth is truthier? It is maddening to continue pointing out all the evil this monstrous devilman has done while his acolytes defend his greatness! Mind-boggling difference in perception. As for ever "liking" the spawn of the devil who is "acting" prez? Me too neither. I hope we survive him. I hope our country survives him. We are getting close to the brink and that is scary as he**! :( Thank you for your thoughtful reply..

It's never been an ego thing with me---although not everyone thinks that.  I've had people accuse me of "just wanting to be right"---which for a long time totally baffled me.  If I'm tutoring you, you are paying me to be right---why would you not want the correct answer.?

I tend to read the fine print whenever such print is involved---and the devil is  in the details.

I remember one local issue that was on the ballot about 45 years ago. It was a widely popular measure, but it was voted down during the election.

Why---because it was worded so that if you were for it, you had to vote against it as it was worded on the ballot.

Turns out a lot of people that I mentioned that to just didn't believe that what I was saying was true....
