I'll tell ya why. The way it works in California the two candidates with the most votes go on to run in the General Election. There are a zillion Dems jockeying for votes. If they split enough of them it is conceivable that TWO REPUBLICANS will be on the ballot in November and no Dems for the hotly contested jobs.! Isn't that a fine kettle of fish?
