So far I've mainly just used fiber supplements when constipated. I've only turned to a true laxative or stool softener in more extreme cases, but that's so rare that I haven't thought about the difference between the two much (a stool softener is really just a more mild form of laxative). Either way I find laxatives cause unpleasant cramping, so it's a last resort for me.
Neither. I would avoid the drugs unless I had a life-threatening condition. I've seen what happens to old people who've become dependent on them in nursing homes. (Three-day cycles. Constipation brings on a sudden increase in dementia - then the laxatives get handed out, then the nurses have to clean up the consequences.)
I eat a high whole-food diet with plenty of natural fiber - no processed foods, sugar or refined flours. I allow myself a small amount of dried fruit (yum!) at about four in the afternoon: 2 figs, 3 Chinese dates, 6 Turkish apricots, or 4 halves of Australian apricots. That amount gives perfect and predictable results.

That sounds like a plan. You wouldnt believe what else works like a charm. Raw eggs in a shake, mixed with bannanas and blueberries. Works like clockwork. ;)
