    Great question Rosie.
Those who complain about socialism never answer questions like this.

Actually SS is an example of forced purchase of insurance.
SSI is an example of welfare.

Not really because its like an enforced pension program.  You pay into it for later use. We are not at that age yet but I have discussed with my husband possible ways of opting out of government Medicare.  When the time comes.  Alternative planning.  Keep the government from controlling us as much as possible.

Socialism or not, I am collecting it once a month as promised. It's an excellent supplement to my two pensions and my part time job.

We like it too. After all we PAID INTO IT for decades. We each have small investments as well as our social security. We are not living HIGH ON THE HOG but we are doing quite swell. We don't require much to be content/satisfied/happy. Thank you for your reply Ele and Happy Sunday! :)

Socialism is the involuntary redistribution of wealth. The keyword there is involuntary.

Welfare programs are not necessarily socialist. I'm happy to pay taxes to support those who can't support themselves, so long as budgets are balanced and taxation is ethical (i.e. low and flat rate). If this were done, it would boom the economy so much that very few people would need help and society could easily provide welfare without irresponsible deficit spending.

The crucial difference in mentality between the left and the right is that I see welfare as a generosity on the part of taxpayers. The leftist sees it as an entitlement on the part of the receiver. The left doesn't see it as a gift, they think society owes them something.
