Check connections and try a wired connection to isolate the problem.

Also run software updates occasionally and restart your router, modem and printer. This post was edited by O-uknow at June 16, 2018 4:08 PM MDT

I would disconnect the wifi during the night.  Why should it stay open all night?  Or at least turn off the printer.  I don't really know why a printer is connected to wifi but I don't need or want to.  I don't use any wifi at all, only wired ethernet connections.

I would power it down and let it sit for a while, then bring it back up and try to manually start the updates. You may get more info or be able to tell what point it's failing at if you watch it. You could also try using the cables for this update. Hopefully whatever's causing the issue will be overwritten with the update.

I had a similar issue with a different HP printer recently. I tried everything. I eventually just got mad enough that I unplugged it and let it sit for a day. When I plugged it back in, it was fine.

Thank you JA.  There are apparently no updates.  But worth trying when I have time.
