Most veg like tomatoes, lettuce ,and so many others are grown in troughs containing liquids and it's called hydroponics .... Foods grown this way are generally tasteless Rosie as they don't have earth to draw their minerals from....
The other factor is that the major food HyperMarkets own most of all the seed rights and only sell a dozen or more different seed... There are 15,000 different varieties growing around the world......most all you will never get to buy oe taste.... Its the same with all other veritys of fruit and veg.....The large corporations pick what you can buy to eat.....
Ironic. Even cruel maybe? As kids anything goes foodwise unless you're a picky eater which I never was. As adults you develop certain preferences based on knowledge. It is then that 100% active tastebuds could be most appreciated. Ah well! Actually some foods are tastier now than when I was a kid. But tomatoes? What are the ones you buy like taste-wise vis a vis those that are homegrown D? No difference or vastly different? Thank you for your reply and Happy Thursday to thee! :)
My parents grew tomatoes ,they grown in the cannary islands and were really crisp skinned and slightly bitter tasting although the sharp might describe the taste better...... They were just so delicious and I would eat them like apples ...they were not the slightest bit sweet or squishy..... The one sold now in supermarkets are sold on how they look and how long they last .....they are tasteless.
Exactly right! They are ever so photogenic and prettily displayed. If packaging satisfies you then you're a happy camper. If taste is what you go for you long for the days when tomatoes TASTED like tomatoes. Same with flowers. Carnations used to have a wonderful perfume. Do they still? Where? Thank you for your reply D. Foods are continually being "improved" to lengthen shelf life. SIGH.
We try to get organically grown at farm stands, farmers markets and supermarkets which taste better than what I remember from my childhood. Of course just being young and having everything be new and fresh added flavor of its own.
