Do people generally get closer together or are they driven farther/further apart by advertisity/tragedy? Why?

It can do either. It depends on how the people deal with the problem either by clinging to and supporting each other or trying to internalize the trauma and working through it themselves....this can sometimes cause resentments or misunderstandings.
