Does fat float and skinny sink? Do fat folks float effortlessly while skinny folks have to tread water vigorously or they sink?

Why are some folks floaters and other folks sinkers?

Fat tissue is less dense than muscle, therefore obese individuals would find it easier to float than us skinny folks.

Then I am an anomaly Ele. I'm 5' 6" and weigh 120 lbs. I float effortlessly. I couldn't sink if I tried. I don't have to move a muscle. I just lay back in the water and stay up. I was married to a guy who wan't exactly fat but he was very chunky stocky heavy. He sank like an anchor unless he moved vigorously. So why is that?

I don't know. I guess I was wrong. When I was in my 30s, lotsa muscle, no fat, I sank like a rock. Not so much now that I have put on a little extra padding.

Hmm. I dunno know. When I was bigger/fatter I didn't swim so I have nothing with which to compare it personally. In my 30's I slimmed down and I 'learned" how to swim at 35. I never sunk. NOT ONCE. In fact fighting my way to the bottom of a pool was an ordeal. Go figger! You have extra padding being older and I've never been in such good shape at 80. Another GO FIGGER! Thank you for your reply! :)
