Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» "A coward dies a thousand deaths a hero dies but one". What's the downside of being a hero and the upside of being a coward?
The hero is trapped in the embellishment of the deed and finds that he/she is a prisoner of the legend and mythology. With the coward, he/she is the beneficiary of the passage of time. The misdeed sort of fades in memory as we usually aren't erecting monuments to cowardice to recall the wonderful moment. Of course, there's the adage about the live coward and the dead hero and which might be more advantageous.
Thank you for your thoughtful reply DA. Of course perception plays a large part. It was the donjohn who said he doesn't like those who get captured. He was referring to John McCain of course but I expect we can extrapolate to that to all those who were captured and tortured by the enemy. They are not heroes to him. I don't know how many other people view hero as the donjohn does. It attracts attention of course which is always the point with him isn't it? Sigh. :(
