For those who took a break from sameoldsameold vis a vis Aretha Franklin and John McCain. Which speaker/entertainer was your favorite?

Did you have a favorite at Aretha's gig? What about at Senator McCain's? Whose speech moved you the most? Of course Meghan's was the most emotional, understandably so but the others said some mighty fine words about the Senator. Who among them said the finest?

Same with Aretha. There were some performers (Ariana Grande for one) and some speakers. Did one appearance stand out for you?

High point - Meghan's eulogy at her dad's. Low point - Ariana being groped at Aretha's.
Groping aside, it was a fitting farewell for an icon and a hero.

SAY WHAT? I guess I missed that! Geez I bet Aretha was furious as he**! I thought Meghan's speech was beautiful if heartbreaking. She made her dad proud. Of that I'm sure. Going from the sublime to the really puzzling. I was so looking forward to the match between Roger and Nick! It COULD HAVE BEEN a great battle. Do you have any idea what happened? Thank you for your reply Sbf and Happy Sunday. I did get a wonderfully refreshing breather yesterday. I was protected for many hours from the usual political crap and I'm still feeling the effects of it today. The love and devotion and good feelings emanating from both gatherings embraces me today. I am holding on to it for dear life. How long can it last? I dunno but fingers crossed at least through today, Today Senator McCain will be buried and I don't know if that will be televised or just a private ceremony for the family and close friends. I also don't know if all those who attended feel anything still that they can carry with them to mitigate the hate and gawdawful that envelopes Washington, D.C. We shall see. SIGH!

The passing shot around the net post - Nick was awestruck and it broke his concentration. The third set was worth watching.

That was some shot! Probably one of the best ever! Too bad it affected Nick adversely. I was looking for (don't laugh) a hard-fought 5-setter! You know I'm a fan of Nick's but I'd give the edge to Roger hoping he would win. However if Nick had won I would not have been muttering to myself or too sad. He is due. It's just that it's gonna have to be a perfect set of circumstances for him to win I guess. Anyway fingers crossed! Thank you for your reply Sbf and Happy Monday! :)

Is Isner just taking the p*ss? I mean, he went 70-68 in the fifth against Mahut eight years ago, but this year chalked up the SECOND longest match in Wimbledon history, going down 26-24 in the fifth to Kevin Anderson. I think he does it on purpose.
Nick reminds me (a little) of another Aussie, Evonne Goolagong. Not his on-court behaviour (Evonne was and is ALWAYS a lady), but the way his concentration seems easily broken at times. Every now and then, the mind "goes walkabout" and isn't on the game. This post was edited by Slartibartfast at September 4, 2018 3:15 AM MDT

I'm SHOCKED STUNNED and MIND BOGGLED Sbf! Did you watch Aussie JOHN MILLMAN beat Roger Federer yesterday? John Millman is a name I have never heard of and neither had Jim. Federer beat Nick as we discussed yesterday then Millman (dark horse to me) beat Federer. So what's the scoop on Millman?  Is he a contender? Sheesh.  I'm not sure about John Isner. I think he is ranked our best player and he does play well. But if you think the way he plays is suspicious let me ask you this. Why would anyone PURPOSELY TANK after he fought his butt off to stay in the game? You think it's fixed? That reminds me of a question to ask. Thank you for your reply. I already asked a question about the Millman/Federer shocker. Happy Tuesday! :)

Millman is a guy I've never even heard of. Did the Fed simply not take him seriously? That can bite you.
I was kidding about Isner, but he does seem to be making a habit of playing epically long matches at the All-England club.

YOU never heard of him either? I heard subsequently that Millman and Federer practice with each other a lot and are friendly. They know each other's game very well. Fed won the first set fairly easily. But then 3 straight sets going he didn't. He was making really basic unforced errors fairly early on but I thought he'd snap out of it as he often doesn. I guess that's the downside of knowing someone's game too well.  Think I'm gonna ask a question about it.
