I taught my son to read at a very early age and by the time he was 3 he had a library card and we went to the library weekly. No joke.  Any parent can teach any child to read. It just takes the desire to do so and the time. Kids'  minds are like sponges. They soak it up. Any of you do that for your kids too? It gives them a head start and teaches them to love books and reading and learning before they ever go to school. A valuable thing for an adult too.

My son was taught to read by the time he was three. He didn't need a library card since we already had a large number of books at home. It took my daughter until she was five to learn, but once she did she couldn't put books down.
Unfortunately, your first statement isn't true. I had many students, even at high school, who had very poor reading skills and almost no writing. Bad parenting or bad early teachers? The debate goes on. This post was edited by Element 99 at September 8, 2018 8:43 AM MDT

You prove my point! Elegantly Ele so I thank you for that. In fact I salute you. Too many parents  don't bother teaching their kids anything and then waste the years when kids learn the fastest by having them play video games or whatever. They get to school and then parents expect the teachers to perform MIRACLES when that best time for them to have learned is past. Whose fault is that? Well blame everything on the teacher. They're used to it. Teachers use their OWN money to buy things the students need to help them learn because the school budget doesn't provide for it and they get dissed by parents for not having performed miracles! SIGH. A teacher's life is not piece of cake or a walk in the park. Thank you for your reply! :)
