It's possible he started something then realized he may be in over his head and hopes he loses so he can get out of the mess he started.

 Early on, before the primaries, I said here on Answermug that the Demoncrats want to lose this election so they can blame all their O'Bamacare troubles on the Republicans. You know, blame it on G.W.Bush. So they chose Clueless Hillary to be the scapegoat. They could get some real presidential contenders, but nooooooo, they wanted someone to be a loser. Seems that way with the Republicans, too.
