An Answermug pal says that as bad as war is, some useful things have resulted. How do we know we wouldn't have been better off without them?

Setting aside the lives that were lost how do we know the money and time we invested in wars couldn't have been more productively utilized such that our progress would have been much greater much faster? How do we know that some of those who died in wars wouldn't have invented life-saving things or found a cure for cancer? We don't know the answers to those questions and never can but I think it's worth thinking about even so.

Well we would be better off without wars too but just try and stop them!  That is what I would call making the best of a bad situation.
