    Hello Rosie:

I knew about them..  They ARE a lousy idea for the very reasons you think they are.  Who came up with the idea???   Well, there's only ONE political party that wants to privatize EVERYTHING the government does..

The question is, will the states follow?

I don't know if that's such a terrible idea, I'm sure some of the prisoners have viable skills, they made license plates didn't they.

Geez Louise excon.  It's been going on for 10 years and I was totally and completely oblivious to it!.  Right you are ducks! It is that one particular political party that adores privatizing. I remember good old G.W. went on social security privatizing tour and tanked badly.  Oh dear. Something else to worry about. Thank you for your reply m'dear and Happy Friday! :)

  • They've been around for a while Rosie.  As is so often the case, claims of 'cheaper' from lobbyists seem to be based on skewed calculations that omit specific and important data.

As for the 'why?', that's fairly easy to answer.  Although it had happened before, prisoners were first 'leased' to landowners and corporations in large numbers both to fill the gap in the economy left by freed slaves and to increase profits where this was not so much of an issue.  That particular methodology was prohibited by Roosevelt.

All in all it's a poor idea with more issues and problems than benefits.
