I thought the problems was solved decades ago. I thought wrong. Why does the Catholic church protect pedophile priests?

Would the church disappear without them? What is the lure the hook the reason why priests and bishops and cardinals and popes protect other priests and bishops and cardinals (and popes?) who vicious perps and harm children? There must be a reason. What is it?
