When you communicate VERBALLY you cannot see how the words are spelled. If a conversation is splendid why does spelling matter?

I think it's ridiculous to get all uppity about a word that is spelled incorrectly. If the words are combined in a beautiful way that is lyrical or the topic is significant and substantial and worth your time why on earth would a misspelled word really obliterate all of that? If so something is very wrong somewhere.

  • Fine. As long as we're not writing and publishing dictionaries any longer. For that matter, if we're not writing and publishing anything any longer, it doesn't matter. The English language will go the way of the dinosaur soon. (At least here) When we become a Spanish speaking nation, we can misspell those words.

  • You bring up a really good point, Rosie. A lot of what has evolved into the American English written language has been the result of misspellings and misuse of certain words. Languages evolve and change over time. It's nothing new and nothing to take up arms against. In the end, languages will sort themselves out much better than most people will.

Here's what I think Lenina and I was an English major. Language is used to communicate. It is viable not dead and is constantly morphing into other shapes. If you understand what someone says what difference could it possibly make if a word is spelled incorrectly? If you don't understand then you ask for clarification. I've never had anyone get upset with me because I didn't understand something. I just asked for restating it a different way or clarification and then I'd get it. But to make a big deal out of it...to swoop in just to correct a word...in the middle of conversation between other people? That strikes me as being VERY RUDE,  VERY  UNNECESSARY and what someone who has no other claim to fame does to get attention. Instead of asking questions or answering questions all these folks do is lie in wait to pounce on someone to show us how very smart and knowledgeable they are and how very dumb the person they swoop in on is. I find that quite annoying and I am never impressed with their knowledge. In fact  they are often wrong but I never bother to tell them that in the now. I used to do so in the olden days when I had more time then but now I just shrug, ignore them and ask questions about them. Sheesh. Thank you for your thoughtful reply and the compliment and Happy Saturday! :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 6, 2018 5:22 PM MDT
