Which is the more wantonly promiscuous LIAR? The weather or the weatherman/woman? We've been PROMISED rain for 2 weeks. Where izzit?

We keep getting jerked around. What's going on? Why is predicting weather so hard? I've read that the European Model of predicting hurricanes is superior to that of the United States. If true why is that? Are they just smarter than we are? Sheesh.

Weather can’t lie, Rosie, those who presume to predict it simply continue to misdiagnose it.

Is it true that weather near the coast is more unpredictable than in the middle of the country DB? Oh and about the European Model of predicting the course of hurricanes. Someone on TV said the European model of tracking hurricanes was better than ours. Have you heard that and if so why is that?  Thank you for your reply! :)

The weather on the earth, indeed the climate in general, is greatly influenced by the oceans.
Surely you know of the El Niño and it’s effects out in the Western US. The warming of the South Pacific that brings drought or deluge to your region of the country.
It seems logical that the closer one is to an ocean, the more its varying influence plays out. I live on the Florida Coast, our weather is famously changeable.

I think you know I live in southern California about 70 miles inland from the Pacific Ocean. So that figgers.  If we lived in the "heartland" we'd probably have much better luck with weather predictions. Thank you for your reply DB . Have you ever been to St. Augustine? I've never been to Florida but if we ever visited I'd surely want to see that town. :) This post was edited by RosieG at October 7, 2018 7:50 AM MDT

Yes, plenty of times. It is a premier example of what is known as “Old Florida”. A great spot for tourism (not too many gators). I recommend it.

Wasn't St. Augustine the very first town in America?

At least among towns founded by Europeans.  The old fortress there is from the 1500’s.

All predictions are probabilistic and will from time to time prove wrong. The problem for weather forecasts is that the algorithms are very sensitive to boundary conditions and the funnel of doubt increases exponentially with time.

I cannot comment on the models as I am not a meteorologist.

I've heard that it is easier to predict weather if you are in the middle of the country than if you are on the coast. Have you heard that too Malizz? Is it that the winds off the ocean affect a lot of things whereas in the middle of the country there is no large body of water to affect it? Thank you for your reply an Happy Sunday! :)
