We know what's true today. But how do we know that historians of long ago didn't lie? We were not there to experience it live. What then?

We read all kinds of things about all kinds of people who lived long ago. How do we know they aren't ALL PARTISAN in nature and some most or all of what was written then and believed are complete  fabrications manufactured to deceive? Rewriting history happens a lot in real time and you can catch the SOB's and challenge them. In 40 years they'll all be dead. Only the slanted untrue flat-out LIES in the words will remain. Woe is us. Poor us. We never had a chance.  :(
