  • An example is Michaelangelo's "David."

He discovered a fault in the Carrara marble block from which he was carving the statue which would cause a large chunk to sheer away.

The position of the fault ran through what would have been the muscles of the back.

So Michaelangelo improvised by carving the back much shallower than it would have been in the ideal athletic figure of a youthful shepherd.

If you see the monument in real life and stand to the side of it - the abnormally shallow chest and flattened back becomes instantly evident to anyone practised in life drawing.

There are many other examples, but I think this one probably illustrates the idea sufficiently.

I'm sure Margarite Matisse would have better answers than mine.

I can see how that small flaw in the right hand corner.  Maybe they put it there just to see if we were paying attention?!  ;) :)

Hi Benedict~ You may read this as a cop-out answer but I feel it worthy of thinking about for a moment.
A masterpiece is in the eye of the beholder just like any other work of art.  It is not fair to judge someones work without knowing their stipulations, handicaps, or talent.
the sculpture is the one that will always find and see the flaws.  A person without knowing the emotion or depth given to the masterpiece cannot rightfully judge.  They need something to compare it to.
If they compare only the thought that they bring to the masterpiece, it is not fair to the artist or the piece of work.

Now, with that all in mind, I can say one masterpiece that I believe (See?  I'm bringing my own interpretation into what I am already judging as a masterpiece)  ahhh hemm.  Clearing my throat and fingers there...
Where was I ?  Oh yes, Masterpiece that I believe was made for incredibly good intentions and survival.

Language.  It is a masterpiece because it is absolutely needed for survival.  It is flawed because it is ever changing and is always open to interpretation.

I guess, since neither of us could open my answers, both of my answers may have been flawed masterpieces!
    :)

I really cannot remember what I had posted, darn.
