I think everyone should act with honor, kindliness, generosity...regardless of the class at birth or later in life.

Oh really?  Then WHY would you back a person who is incapable of any of it?   Have a paper towel.

Not sure what "high birth" means but yes it did used to be a thing.  And not just a matter of social position but of success in life.  We were always taught that because we had it easier than many people that it was our duty to help those less fortunate.  Growing up my bothers always used to volunteer and help out in retirement homes, civic affairs, helping less fortunate neighbors with projects  (we really didn't have any poor people where we grew up).  Unfortunately I did not participate as I was too young then when I became a teenager I was too rebellious and self-centered. But now I have become successful I am able to carry that out where I now live with my husband.

Good for you and your hubby too og! Excellent! Thank you for your thoughtful reply. It warms my heart to know that despite the current me me me me me greedy selfish uncaring era we seem to be trapped in right now there are pockets of brave folks who do believe in helping those in need rather than building walls to keep them out or keeping children locked up in cages and kennels separated from their parents. :) This post was edited by RosieG at December 24, 2018 5:47 AM MST

OK thank you but what I wrote I did not mean to be political. I do not believe in "open borders" nor do I believe that any one of us will ever solve all the ills of the world and end all the suffering in the world.  All we can do as individuals is help some people we know are less fortunate than ourselves.  We also must be concerned about whether, in giving our "help", we are in fact helping or hurting them.
