Whom would you IDEALLY like to lead your country? Why?

Who the heck is THAT?  

I think a really ethical man is Bernie Sanders.  And I think a real ethical, progressive woman is Elizabeth Warren.

If you don't?  I would love to hear why not.  And who the heck is that guy you love.

Okay.    I looked him up.  He is likeable.  He loves animals.  But.... and this is a huge but.... he doesn't know squat about leading any country.  He doesn't know foreign policy.  He doesn't know anything.  He is a philosopher.  He is not cut out to lead a nation.

He would be good in some area where he could bring his ideas to fruition, but NEVER as President of the USA.  Get real.

Peter Albert David Singer is the Professor of Bioethics atPrinceton University, USA. 

He specialises in applied ethics and approaches ethical issues from a secular and utilitarian perspective — meaning he looks at the latest issues in ethics that arise from modern technology, medicine and social issues across the globe, and applies them to the practical ways in which humans could live lives that cause the least suffering.

One of his books, Practical Ethics, gives a really good idea of how he teaches thinking. He shows all the implications around every possible stance, and allows the reader to draw his or her own conclusions about how best to behave. 

His personal point of view is to aim for an ethics which enables people to be able to live together peacefully irrespective of their religions or politics - hence his philosophy is secular and not based on any particular faith.

Although he is widely known for his work on animal ethics, his thinking goes way beyond just animals. He covers every ethical issue of our times.

He is widely regarded as one of the world’s top intellectuals.

I like both Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren based on what I know of them from their public profiles.
I worry that Bernie may be a little old and might not be up to handling the stress of the POTUS's job, but I like his values and character.
I would never choose an actor for president, even if some are highly intelligent and have excellent values.
I think politicians need a thorough grounding in ethics, law, economics, history and sociology - although I've never encountered one that had qualifications in all these fields.
I think we need universities to start courses in all the knowledge and skills needed to develop competent politicians, and we need ample scholarships or public funding to ensure that the brightest can get the educations they need. And then they need life experience in the relevant fields.

I beg you -- never assume that intellectuals know nothing about politics. They read and follow what happens in public life perhaps more avidly than anyone else, and they are careful about accessing their information from accurate sources.
One, it takes a lot of political nouse to be a professor - the position demands it. It's just a much smaller political pool inside a uni - but one inhabited by people with brilliant minds who will not suffer fools or corruption.
Two, a philosopher is a master of argument. He can pick false evidence and logical fallacies as quickly as we can blink. Therefore he can promote ideas on the basis of sound premises, and can easily destroy the arguments of his opponents. Singer, in particular, is good at doing this in language that anyone can understand.
Three, I would not expect Singer to bring animal rights to the national agenda, except perhaps in minor ways, such as legislation around scientific experiments, feedlots and abattoirs - because these issues are minor compared to the major ones now facing the USA. As a practical ethicist, he would understand the need to prioritise issues. It is highly likely that his first priority would be global warming, since the USA is responsible for one-third of all the excess CO2 in the atmosphere. He would probably then address issues of social justice and its links with economic policies.

As for getting real, I wasn't serious. There's no chance that a man like him would accept a position as a candidate. His role in life is behind the scenes of public life, educating and teaching people the skills of thinking.
