Dear Rosemarie . I know only three sure roads to contentment. 1. Lobotomy. 2. Senility. 3. Incurious and uncritical self-satisfaction. Happyness (sic) comes only in bursts and sexual love the same. As for accomplishment it keeps ahead of you and the more you accomplish the less it is enough. The only fulfilled people I know are those whose curiosity keeps them too busy to wonder whether they are happy, fulfilled, contented or not. Be sure that no matter what you do it will not be enough to you. As for direction there are millions of them and they are all the same one. And in human endeavor the range between great and small is very short. Yours, John Steinbeck"

Why did I share that with you? Because I think it is far too beautiful to keep from you. One day I will be gone and those words deserve to be released and read and contemplated by others and not die with me. So here you are. My gift to you. I hope you find meaning in them. Those words have helped me. Perhaps they can help you too.

I treasure it bh. It is the only thing I own from a stranger that I cherish. Thank you for your reply. I appreciate it!  Of course John Steinbeck has always been my favorite author and I wrote him a 28-page letter on lined paper, both sides one day at night after a very hard day. I poured my heart out to him. I guess he noticed it! :)
