Are "whites" the only racists bigots homophobes? Does it exist among people of color too? Tom Brokaw is in the news sadly. Know why?

He was saying that Hispanics must make more of an effort to assimilate! WHAT? Does that mean become homogenized and lose their cultural and historical identity? Why would he say that and though he apologized multiple times he can't undo what he said.  If we all did that then America would be that scary MYSTERY MEAT which is cheap and prevalent and no one knows what's in it. What does ASSIMILATE mean to YOU?

My parents and grandparents came to America from Armenia and Turkey and spoke no English. They "assimilated" enough to learn the language and study to become naturalized American citizens which they all became. HOWEVER in our homes we ate ARMENIAN FOOD. We attended ARMENIAN CHURCHES. Went to ARMENIAN PICNICS. Sang ARMENIAN SONGS. Was that due to a failure to assimilate or due to pride in a culture that was our heritage? Stupid Brokaw said a stupid thing and can't unsay it.

If you scratch the surface of every human being will you find a racist or a bigot or a homophobe just below the surface?

    You can assimilate into the American culture without giving up your own background culture.  All the large immigrants groups that came here in the last century moved up the socio-economic ladder by learning English, getting a good education, getting good jobs and adopting the values we hold dear.  Of course, those values seem to have changed somewhat over time, but we still stand for freedom, democracy, and other rights which many countries don't afford their citizens.  At some point, if you want to advance, you need to conform to the mainstream.  That doesn't mean that you should forego your birth culture.  Happy Monday. :)
