Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Wind chill expected in Chicago today 45 below to 60 below! How low do wind chills go? How long can a person survive in a sub 45 windchill?
Climate. Kugaaruk is the location of the coldest wind chill ever recorded in Canada, of -79 °C or -92 °C on 13 January 1975, based on an air temperature of −51 °C (−60 °F) and a wind speed of 56 km/h (35 mph). This is not the coldest temps ever recorded. Vostok Research Station, Antarctica...-127F. I wouldn't think there would be a limit. At -45F frostbite can occur within 5 minutes on exposed skin. Ours will be about -35F here in Toledo. I ain't going anywhere other than a morning job. (If the car starts.)
The limit has never been experienced on Earth, but it would be at the point at which all gases present liquefy. No air, no wind. About four hundred below.
On the other thread about your cold weather Ele I asked if your car would start in that kind of weather. I remember when we lived in Massachusetts and it was very cold if I had to go out with my infant son I'd wrap a wool scarf about his face. My then mother-in-law who was a nurse told me that it would somewhat warm the air he breathed so I did that but luckily I didn't have to take him out much when it was very cold. Those are very cold wind chills. I think on top of Mt. Washington somewhere in New England it gets the windiest as it does anywhere in the world. I could be mistaken about that. So frostbite can occur in 5 minutes? Every inch of skin has got to be protected. What do cops do? No bike riding in cold weather? Thank you for your reply and the info. I appreciate it. 35 below in Toledo! It rhymes! Anything that rhymes is okey dokey with me! Thee too?

OMG Ele! You don't hafta go out in it do you? Has it ever been that cold in Toledo? Is the very coldest it has ever been that you can remember experiencing? Keep warm. Thank you for your reply! I hope they don't change it again unless it's less worse not more worse! :)

When I was a youngster, the concept of wind chill didn't exist, at least numerically. The record temperature low is -20F in 1984. I was on a ship in the Persian Gulf. Over 95F every day. And yes, we have a morning job tomorrow, but we will only be outside for a few minutes and her car has a remote starter.
Oh gosh I just mentioned Mt. Washington on this thread in response to your other reply. Is it in New Hampshire? I can't even almost imagine what that would feel like. Death by freezing doesn't sound pleasant. I mean that is 134.6 degrees BELOW FREEZING! Sheesh. Thank you for your reply Ele! :)
