Discussion»Statements»Rosie's Corner» Why do Vegans give up eating animal products like eggs or milk or cheese or ice cream? Why is there a problem? How does it harm the animal?
The ones I know ... they do so because they don't want to contribute to the exploitation of animals. IE: Since we can't ask the cow if she wants to give milk, we shouldn't take the milk.
Oh? Do we ask the bee if it's okay to take the honey or is honey off limits too? Sorry Walt but that does seem to me to be excessive. What happens to cows that are not milked? Don't they get very uncomfy? If you don't eat eggs do you throw them away? How many people starve whose lives could be saved if that were to occur? That really makes no sense to me. I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply! :)

I did not know until recently, that dairy cows have to be impregnated to give milk. So I guess you could claim we "rape" the cows to get the milk. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dairy_cattle
I'm not sure about bees. They produce honey naturally in the wild. So maybe wild honey is okay? But honey from a beekeeper would be a no-no?
It doesn't make sense to me, either. If you follow everything to it's end, the crops they eat take land away from animals - so how is that okay?
A very good question Walt which, as you know, can never be answered satisfactorily. It seems such a waste of product. Folks have all kinds of different ethical yardsticks. That one I would not appeal to me. It seems nonsensical frankly. But I don't know everything and I'm not in their minds so I cannot possibly comprehend that kind of "logic". Now if an animal has to suffer that's different. Doesn't caviar require the death of fish? Or do they lay eggs i lke chickens do? I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply Walt.
To many people the terms "vegan" and "vegetarian" mean very particular and specific things these days and you have to get them right or they become upset. Then there are also "lacto-vegetarians" and things like that as well.
A lot of people go off animal food for health reasons - they think vegetable food is more healthy for them. So not just a matter of harming animals and exploiting them.
The way I choose to see it if you eat mostly vegetable food - grains, beans, sea vegetables, and so on - you are vegetarian. Whether you occasionally eat a cow or a fish or a piece of cheese or not. That was the way it used to be and is a lot simpler. Shouldn't be like being a "tenth pregnant" where if you occasionally have something else you get kicked off the bus.
