Is chess really all about killing kings and queens or does it have any practical value or is it a skill in itself?

The "practical value" is to teach patience and planning.
The best players win by capturing (and sacrificing) as few pieces as possible.

  • My husband is a big chess player.  It's all about strategy .. and that takes a lot of skill and patience.  I don't know if it's about killing Kings and Queens, or just capturing and controlling them.

Although the ultimate aim is to kill off the king, a whole lot of subtle (skilful) manoeuvring takes place before then.
