That is what is the issue here. SMARMY. It is based on money and power and people will lie cheat and steal to grab on to that brass ring.
So, like any negative, we have LAWS to keep order and people in line. We have a society. Republicans who want money call this society SOCIALISM any time they figure they can rip off the masses and line their pockets.
Dems who want money claim also it is for the common good and their decline is the END JUSTIFIES THE MEANS idea of getting there. In other words, yes, I lie, but I do it for the greater good. YEAH. RIGHT. A lie will come back to roost. Ask Clinton. Look at the can of worms he opened. Being a golden Dem and going down in LIES.
He is still lying so in my mind all the good he did is tainted because he is not to be trusted.
If we break the LAW we have a mess. And we are surrounded by a sea of liars on both sides. The reason we are in such a mess is because the BIG FAT LIARS are getting mixed up with the little white liars.
The little whites (like Cohen) are being played in the forefront like a martyr. He is the liar.

Not entirely Sharon. Not always. Admittedly pols are not the most honest human beings as a group. However the number of lies in this gubment are infinite and eternally flowing and grotesque and dangerous and unpatriotic and cruel and inhuman and racist and bigoted and treasonous and evil.. For no reason, for some reason, for good reason. When the head is rotted the entire body rots.
