Ever hear of SPOOFING? I talked to the FCC in D.C. yesterday. Wanna know why?

I got calls from me to me. I asked a question about it on the mug and a pal told me it was called 'spoofing" and he knew someone who also had been spoofed. I was gonna ignore it but then I got 3 more calls. So I called Frontier, our phone company, and told them what was happening. I talked to customer service who switched me to repair and there I talked to a guy named Mike. He told me to call the FCC and gave me the number. That spoofing is a huge problem getting hugher and the FCC is tracking it and trying to do something about it. So I made the call.

Talked to a gal named Amanda. She said 90% of her calls are complaints about spoofing. It has been going on for about FIVE YEARS and is getting much worse. She took down our phone number, address, and gave us a CASE number. She also provided a link that will give us info about how to reduce the calls on our end.

My adventure with the Federal Government. Amanda said the FCC is working in concert with the FTC and that they are working to get some kind of legislation that stop the perps and punish them...at least those in the United States. Apparently foreign countries also spoof and it's unclear whether they can be stopped.

FYI. If you get spoofed call the FCC. I have the number if you want it.

I'll add that if you get a scam email ... you can forward the information to the FBI.

I'm not sure how an individual can block spoofing, at this time.  Other than putting your own phone number in your phone's blocked number list.

I'm surprised the phone company doesn't have someway, with all the automation they have available. This post was edited by Walt O'Reagun at March 5, 2019 9:25 AM MST

I was told either by the Frontier Tech guy or Amanda at the FCC that YOU CANNOT BLOCK YOUR OWN NUMBER. I don't know if the phone companies are partnering with the feds to do anything about it. Hopefully they are. Thank you for your reply Walt!  :)

If you're using a "smartphone", you can get various apps that allow you to block incoming numbers ... including if it's your own.

For my landline phone, I don't really use the CallerID.
I let my answering machine screen the calls.  I don't even return all the calls from people I know who left messages.  LOL

We just have a landline currently.  No cell phone..either dumb or smart! When the call comes it shows up on the Caller ID screen on our phone. We let our answering machine screen all calls. It is UNNERVING to see your name calling your phone number from your phone number Walt. It didn't happen even once yesterday! It hit multiple times on Monday and nothing yesterday. Weird world. Thank you for your helpful reply Walt and Happy Wednesday to ya! :)

Ive done it almost daily ever since I could walk and talk.....:)

That's what it used to mean here too D. My only experience with it before Monday. On Monday I got maybe 6 calls from me and my number calling our number. Very peculiar to see that on the Caller ID screen. But yesterday? Not even one call! So maybe it was just a one-time hit and it won't happen again. In the meantime we registered it with the FCC and have a  Case Number in case it should happen again. We also were provided a link from the FCC to give some help about what to do and how to minimize our exposure. Thank you for your reply and Happy Wednesday. It is a world-wide thing apparently. Maybe one day you'll be spoofed as I was too!  :)
