The "WORLD HAPPINESS" Report is out. Tops is Finland followed by Denmark Norway and Iceland. The US is at #19 dropping yearly.WHY?

Well ya see it's like this. We got lots of anxiety. Lots of FEAR. Lots of division. Lots of HATE. Lots of apprehension.

Will it get better? Can we get back up to where we were  a few years ago? I dunno.

"We'll see what happens! Everyone says so. No collusion. Lock her up. Make America Great Again. No puppet. Low IQ. The press is the enemy of the people. Democrats hate Jewish people. Trust me I am the only source of truth. I know MORE than the generals. I will get the best people. I am a stable genius. I believe he knew nothing about it because he said so. I  believe he didn't do it because he said so. I was never a fan of John McCain and I never will be. Fake News. Witch Hunt. Both sides are to blame. Both sides have good people. I feel sorry for him. He is a liar. I had nothing to do with it. I didn't know anything about it. It never happened. It might have happened. If it happened there was nothing wrong with. It happened. I knew. So what?

Geez ya think any of the above has anything ta do with it?

    Well ... Finland and Denmark consume more alcohol per capital than Americans.
    And Finland has a higher suicide rate than America.
    So not sure how Finland gets the top in happiness.

    Other than that, those countries are also smaller and yes tend to have less political drama.
    (though Norway has to worry about their Russian neighbor)

    Heck, I have some Facebook friends who live in Norway ... one born there, and one moved from America.
    They live next door to the royal family - who seem to be far more approachable than most American politicians.

    The first part, I'm not undercutting it so much as wondering how they get the result.
    The introduction says it is "by how happy their citizens perceive themselves to be."

    I guess I'm wondering: If the people of Finland perceive themselves to be so happy ... why do they have a higher rate of suicide and alcoholism than "less happy" countries?

    I'm wondering if you were already cognizant of the suicide/alcoholism rates or did you go out of your way to find flaws/flies in that ointment? Also how much MORE? Is it significant or in? So I can't answer your question. Perhaps your Norwegian friends can since they're closer to the situation than I am. Many people lives lives of QUIET DESPERATION. Many are unhappy and just hanging on by their fingertips. Their religions make suicide a SIN so they can't opt out of life like that. How many people are there in that category? I don't know the answer to that question either. But all we have is our perception Walt. Those who perceive themselves to be very happy and those who  are alcoholics and commit suicide probably don't hang out with one another. What I pecceive myself to be(VERY HAPPY) has zero to do with the alcoholism or suicide rate in Hemet or California or the United States of America. In my opinion. Thank you for your reply  m'dear. Also how many people out of how many people answered the survey? What was the population of survey takers vis a vis the entire population of Finland? Would that not matter or would it matter substamtially? Maybe there are far more happy people who were so busy being happy they didn't bother with a survey? I'm jes sayin''.....

    I've heard for decades that those North Sea nations have higher rates of depression, suicide, and alcoholism.
    Allegedly, much of it is due to the weather and SAD lights help.  I know my American friend in Norway has to have a daily treatment of SAD lighting during the winter.  But living next door to the Royals, she is also cheered up by seeing their peacocks who roam loose.

    That's a good question about how many people were surveyed.
    Finland, Denmark, and Norway each have about 5.5 million people - Iceland has about 400,000.
    Maybe 5 million citizens is ideal for happiness?  Let's split the US up into 70 nations, and find out.

    You know what I read years ago about Sweden? Their suicide rate was up and maybe they had a lot of alcoholics too. It is said that having a country that takes care of the people from cradle to grave was the problem. They didn't have to work for anything. The state took care of them. I don't know if that is true of other Scandinavian countries too but I'm gonna ask. Thank you for your reply Walt!

    If there was research proving that theory.

    Just as we now know keeping our minds active can delay some types of dementia, could having some stress in your life help stave off some types of depression?

    I don't know what it's like to be free of worry Walt. As a single mom for years I worried about my ability to take care of my son. Daddy dearest did not pay the child support he was supposed to. We divorced when my son was 3. The court awarded me $100 a month child support till he was 18. That is 15 years x 12 months x $100/month.or $18,000! Over the years he paid me in total $3000! I didn't spend a dime of it. I saved it and put it in a savings account and when my son graduated from Cal Berkeley with an undergraduate degree I gave it to him as his graduation present. It wasn't easy but  fortunately I had an excellent job at that time that paid me VERY WELL. Just when I most needed it. I worry about Jim and me now outliving our small investments. Could we make it on social security? Sure except that Don don has cut $2.7 TRILLION out of our domestic spending budget including social security, medicare and medicaid. When he gets done will we have anything? He worries me bigly oftenly which is to say 24/7. I hope you don't have to worry about such stuff. Thank you for your reply Walt!  :)

    It goes to show the farther north people live the more saner they are. The coldness is beneficial for one's mental health.  Also they are more socialist, eg- no abomination like private health insurance with obscene deductibles required.

    We can't blame it all on trump. While his "reign" has served to accelerate things, this country has had issues long before trump took office

    The biggest issue in this country is money.  1 in 6 people live below the poverty line.  While jobs may have increased, a vast majority of them are low paying jobs (at or barely above minimum wage) and have little to no benefits (i.e medical).  Medical and prescription drug costs are skyrocketing, but wages are stagnant.    Many people can't afford a place to live (high rent, high price of buying a house).  In some states, the population exceeds the available housing.  Homelessness is on the rise.

    Lets not forget education.  Education in this country is mediocre at best.  Our kids are not being taught the fundamentals.  Many kids coming out of highschool can't spell or do math and nearly all of them aren't prepared for life in the "real world" (getting and holding a job, creating and maintaining a budget, etc.).  Many parents want schools to do their parenting job for them which limits resources needed for other things.   Higher education costs have gotten so high that many poor people can't afford it - despite programs and scholarships. 

    You're right, we have a lot of anxiety in this country.  So much so that we are a heavily anxiety medicated society (xanax and such).  Yes, we have lots of fears.   Will my job be there tomorrow?  Will I be able to pay the rent/mortgage?  What will happen if I need medical care and m,u insurance wont cover it?  Are my kids safe at school?  Will some whacko shoot me or blow me up when I go to the store?  Will a police officer shoot me just because of my skin color?. 
    You're definitely correct to say that we have hate and division.  We have TONS of it!!  We claim to pride ourselves on our diversity, yet many of us (not all) tend to think we're better than someone else - whether that person is a different color, nationality, religion, gender, age, or political persuasion.  People (in general) tend to fear that which is different.  Many times that fear turns into hate.  From hate grows anger; and, if anger isn't held in check, it can produce violent acts.

    No, this is NOT a happy country.   If we want it to be a happy country then WE must make it that way.  Not the government.  Not the "other guy". Not our kids (the next generation).  A happy nation starts with 'us'.

    Thank you for a very thoughtful reply Shuhak. You know what they say? The fish ROTS from the top? Things have declined under Don don from when Obama was our prez. I know they did start declining before Don don was "Installed" as our bogus prez by hostile foreign powers but he has accelerated and exacerbated all that is bad and there is nothing GOOD he has brought to us. So he is not entirely to blame but it's his watch and the buck stops with him and what the he** does he spend his time doing?     The US isnt that of a bad country i think, its just that its filled up with people everywhere.... 300 some millions people , its quite a lot. if it had less population, maybe it would stand in a better place.

    You have made a good point franc although if there were fewer people maybe they'd be worser. At this point I honestly don't know what it would take for us to be better than we are. It seems people are lazy and so they take the path of least resistance. I'm going to ask a question about it. Thank you for your reply m'dear!  :)
